Originally named Oscar, this remarkably lucky mascot began his military service aboard the German battleship Bismarck in 1941. When the ship was sunk after a fierce battle, British sailors from the HMS Cossack spotted the cat floating on a wooden plank in the water and rescued him, adopting him as their ship's mascot and renaming him Sam.
Just a few months later, the HMS Cossack was torpedoed and sank. Once again, Sam survived the explosion and was found clinging to ship debris. He was brought to Gibraltar and transferred to the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. In an unbelievable twist of fate, the Ark Royal was torpedoed just weeks later. Sam was found floating on a wooden plank by rescuers, completely unharmed but understandably furious. Officially retired from military duty due to his chaotic luck, "Unsinkable Sam" lived out the rest of his peaceful days on land in Belfast.
