In 2006, the Kishigawa train line in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, was facing imminent closure due to severe financial losses. In a desperate bid to attract passengers, the railway company appointed Tama, a local stray calico cat who frequented the station, as the official Stationmaster of Kishi Station in 2007. Dressed in a custom-made stationmaster’s cap and collar, Tama greeted passengers from her ticket booth office.
The publicity stunt quickly turned into a global phenomenon. Tourists from all over the world flocked to Wakayama just to catch a glimpse of the feline executive. "Tama-mania" generated an estimated 1.1 billion yen for the local economy in her first year alone, completely rescuing the line from financial ruin. Tama was later promoted to "Ultra Stationmaster" and even knighted, cementing her legacy as the cat who put her railway back on the track to success.
