In 1997, the residents of the small, quirky town of Talkeetna, Alaska, were thoroughly dissatisfied with the human candidates running for local office. As a write-in protest vote, a majority of the townspeople elected a tailless orange kitten named Stubbs, who had recently been found abandoned in a grocery store parking lot.
While Talkeetna's mayoral role was entirely honorary, Stubbs became a massive tourism driver for the region. He spent his days holding "meetings" at the local general store, drinking water laced with catnip out of a wine glass, and lounging on restaurant patios. Stubbs successfully maintained his high approval rating and held onto his political office for two decades until his peaceful passing in 2017, proving that sometimes a feline touch is exactly what local government needs.
