How Did Cats Become Domesticated?

 

Today, cats live comfortably in our homes, sleep on our furniture, and somehow manage to convince us that we are the ones who belong to them. But thousands of years ago, their ancestors were wild animals living independently in the landscapes of the Near East.

So how did wild cats become our companions?

The story is fascinating because, unlike dogs, cats were probably not deliberately domesticated by humans at the beginning. Instead, their relationship with people appears to have developed gradually, as cats and humans discovered that living near one another could be beneficial.

It Started With Agriculture

The story begins around the time humans started becoming farmers.

About 10,000 years ago, communities in the Fertile Crescent began growing crops and storing grain. These new settlements attracted mice, rats, and other rodents looking for an easy food supply.

And where there were rodents, there were predators.

Small wildcats, particularly the Near Eastern wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica), would have been attracted to these settlements because they offered an abundant source of prey.

For humans, having cats around could have been useful. A cat that hunted rodents was essentially providing natural pest control.

The relationship was probably something like an informal agreement: humans provided food opportunities and shelter, while cats helped control rodents.

Cats May Have Chosen Us

One of the most interesting things about cat domestication is that cats may have largely domesticated themselves.

Unlike animals that humans intentionally bred for particular jobs, early cats could simply take advantage of the new environment created by farming communities.

The friendlier and less fearful cats were more likely to remain close to people. Humans, in turn, may have tolerated and eventually encouraged their presence.

Over many generations, this association could have favored cats that were more comfortable living around humans.

Rather than humans saying, "Let's domesticate this animal," the process may have been much more gradual:

Rodents attracted cats → cats came near settlements → humans tolerated cats → cats became accustomed to humans → a closer relationship developed.
