In 1948, a malnourished black-and-white cat named Simon was smuggled aboard the British Royal Navy sloop HMS Amethyst in Hong Kong. Simon quickly excelled at controlling the ship's massive rat infestation and boosting the morale of the crew. However, in 1949, during the Yangtze Incident, the ship came under heavy fire from Chinese communist artillery, severely wounding Simon with shrapnel and burns.
Despite his critical injuries, Simon crawled back onto the deck to resume his duties. The ship was trapped on the river for over three months in sweltering heat, and rats threatened to destroy the crew's dwindling food rations. Simon single-handedly kept the rat population under control while providing invaluable comfort to the traumatized, wounded sailors. For his extreme resilience, Simon was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal—the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross—making him the only cat in history to receive the honor.
