In 1947, a stray gray tabby cat wandered into a classroom at Elysian Heights Elementary School in Echo Park, California. The students fed him lunch and named him "Room 8" after the room number where he first appeared. To the amazement of the faculty, Room 8 adopted the school as his permanent residence during the academic year, attending classes, sleeping on desks, and eating with the children.
Even more astonishingly, Room 8 perfectly understood the school calendar. Every year when summer vacation arrived, he would disappear into the neighborhood, only to walk back through the school gates on the exact first morning of the fall semester. He became an international celebrity, receiving over 100,000 letters of fan mail from children around the world. He was featured in magazines, lookbooks, and a documentary before passing away in 1968, leaving behind a legacy that the school still honors to this day.
