In 2006, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office was investigating a tip about an individual practicing veterinary medicine without a license, posing a massive safety threat to local pets. To catch the suspect in the act, investigators needed a perfect decoy, so they enlisted the help of Fred, a charismatic former stray who had been adopted by an assistant district attorney.
Wearing an undercover wire hidden near his carrier, Fred was brought into the suspect’s home by a plainclothes investigator who claimed the cat needed a medical check-up. Fred remained calm, playing his part flawlessly while the suspect offered an illegal medical diagnosis and tried to sell unprescribed medication. The moment the fake vet accepted cash for the treatment, police officers raided the house and made the arrest.
