In March 1996, an abandoned garage used as a crack house in Brooklyn, New York, caught fire. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, but a local firefighter named David Giannelli heard faint cries coming from the smoking rubble. He discovered a heavily blistered calico cat named Scarlett who had been living in the building with her litter of five kittens.
